Boy with Down syndrome found starving and locked in attic is reunited with officers who rescued him

 

In 2010 a boy with Down syndrome was discovered in his family’s attic, starved and neglected by the one person who was supposed to care for him.

Giovanni “Govi” Eastwood was 6 years old at the time, but weighed the same as a three year old.

His mom Rachel Perez had been taken into custody for outstanding warrants and police had found her other children and taken them to a safe place but Govi remained in the attic of his Kansas home.

“She (Perez) concocted some story about where Govi was,” said Sergeant John Klingele who discovered the boy. “So they all ended up leaving and Govi was still there.”

Officers had a hunch that the boy was still in the house and returned to look again. After calling out to the boy they eventually realized that he was in the attic.

“He looked like a kid out of a concentration camp, skin and bones,” Klingele recollected when he first saw Govi. “We were told he was going to be 7 and size-wise he looked 3 maybe.”

Govi weighed just 17 pounds and couldn’t walk, barely talked, and was covered in excrement. 

Starved of nutrients, the boy had lost hair on his head, his bones were brittle and bowed from rickets, and the fatty tissue on his bottom had wasted away. Medical staff said Govi wouldn’t have lived much longer if he hadn’t been rescued that night, as reported by the Kansas City Star.

There was no blanket, no toys, the boy had just been left up there, authorities believed his mother put him up there to hide him away.

Perez is currently serving an eight-year prison term for attempted murder over the treatment of her child.

Six years later the officers who found Govi that day were reunited with him and couldn’t believe the transformation.

‘The kid is magical’

Govi and his two sisters were taken in and adopted by their great aunt and uncle, Stacy and Joe Eastwood. Govi’s recovery has taken a while; at first he would only sleep on the floor and was worrying he was going to get hit every time someone wanted to high five him, but now he feels safe and loved by his new family.

“The kid is magical. Everybody he comes in contact with, he just brings out a better person in them,” Eastwood said.

The officers who saved him certainly noticed the positive change in the 12 year old who visited him at the Sherriff’s Department in 2016 where he was made honorary deputy and awarded a plaque.

Govi shook the hands of the officers and thanked them for rescuing him that day.

“That boy is the hero. Seeing how big his heart is and his smile is… It’s really good to see him,” Klingele said. 

According to his great aunt Govi slept with his special plaque that night.

So she turned to acupuncture, according to a case published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Acupuncture, a centuries-old alternative treatment, involves inserting needles into the body at specific points to relieve pain or treat illnesses. In this case, the needles— presumably made of gold — were intentionally left in her knees for continued stimulation.

But leaving needles in the body isn’t without risk.

“Foreign objects left inside the body can lead to inflammation, abscesses and infection,” said Dr. Ali Guermazi, a professor of radiology at Boston University who wasn’t involved in the case.

Foreign invaders

He also warned that embedded needles can complicate X-ray readings. “The needles may obscure some of the anatomy,” Guermazi said in 2013.

The body also doesn’t always take kindly to foreign invaders, and the reaction can fall under foreign body reaction or chronic inflammatory response.

“The human body wants to get rid of the foreign object,” Guermazi explained. “It starts with some mechanism of defense, for example inflammation and forming [fibrous tissue] around the object.”

Even more concerning, needles left in the body can make future medical imaging dangerous. “The patient can’t go into an MRI because needles left in the body may move, and damage an artery,” Guermazi added.

Evidence that acupuncture actually treats medical conditions is limited. Yet it remains a popular option for painful joints, especially in some Asian countries where inserting tiny pieces of sterile gold thread around a joint is a common arthritis treatment.

In the U.S., acupuncture is also widely used — an estimated 3.1 million adults and 150,000 children received the treatment in 2007, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

For this woman, her gold-laden knees are a stark reminder that sometimes, alternative medicine can leave more than just a mark — it can leave a literal treasure trove.

Dolly Parton has never been much of a politician. She didn’t speak out on political issues, but instead took the initiative on her own to try to create a better world.

Six Flags roller coaster shut down following several deaths and brain injuries

 

A Six Flags roller coaster has been shut down after two people died and several others suffered severe brain injuries requiring emergency surgery.

X2, a fan-favorite attraction at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, has been closed since July 12.

The ride opened in 2001, and has been linked to over a dozen serious injuries, several people left with comas or lasting disabilities, and two deaths, according to CNN. Despite repeated complaints over the years, state regulators allowed it to keep operating until last month.

Two women riding X2 seriously hurt only six days apart

The most recent cases involve Hawaii resident Pamela Guillen, 40, and Los Angeles resident Naomi Greer-Wilkinson, 25, both of whom needed emergency brain surgery after riding X2 within days of each other in July.

Guillen had been anxious about riding the coaster in the first place, wanting to join her 16-year-old daughter. She hit her head multiple times on the headrest during the ride, began vomiting once the car returned to the station, and lost consciousness shortly after. 

A CT scan revealed a severe subdural hematoma and brain compression. 

She woke from a coma two weeks later with a shaved and stapled head, with no memory of what had happened to her.

Just six days later, Greer-Wilkinson boarded the ride with her twin brother and younger sister. She lost consciousness soon after and was rushed into emergency brain surgery. Her family says doctors told them to prepare for the worst. 

She remains in a coma on a ventilator more than a month later.

Her mother, Artemis Greer, told CNN, “Naomi should have never ever in a million years even had the option to get on that ride.” Her father added that whoever made the decision to keep the ride running has “a lot to answer for.”

A pattern that stretches back years

The two recent cases are unfortunately just the tip of the iceberg. Lucy Alvarez, 46, was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury after riding X2, having hit the back of her head hard on the ride’s headrest.

Alvarez continued experiencing dizziness and head pain even after returning home to San Diego, and an ER visit confirmed a traumatic subdural hematoma. According to her attorney, the injury forced her to abandon nursing school and has left her dealing with memory loss, balance problems, and chronic migraines. Her case is set to go to trial in October 2027.

In 2022, 22-year-old Christopher Hawley rode X2 with his brother and cousin, all three hitting their heads on the seats during the ride. He complained of feeling lightheaded before losing consciousness. His cousin later recalled in a court deposition, “I will never forget the fear from the look he gave me as his eyes closed.” 

By the time surgeons operated, his brain had swelled so severely it began pushing through the surgical opening. He died ten hours after riding the coaster.

Six Flags has confirmed only that “the ride remains closed at this time,” without addressing what prompted the shutdown or when, if ever, it might reopen.
