The GOP-led Senate on Thursday narrowly defeated a House-passed War Powers resolution that would restrict President Trump’s action in Iran.
Four GOP Senators Thom Tillis (NC), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Susan Collins (ME) and Rand Paul (KY) joined the Democrats and voted to restrict Trump’s war powers.
Democrats Senator John Fetterman voted with the Republicans.
The measure failed 49-50.
The House passed the resolution earlier this month with seven Republicans defectors.
Despite voter fury and rising fuel prices, most Republican senators stayed the course with President Donald Trump and his war on Iran in a vote Thursday.
Though vulnerable Republicans on the campaign trail broke with Trump earlier this week, calling for an “immediate end” to the war, lawmakers on the Hill stuck with him and defeated another attempt by Democrats to rein in his war authorities as the conflict nears the eight-month mark.
Still, there was a group of rebellious Republicans who had consistently voted with Democrats, including Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Rand Paul, R-Ky. New blood was added this time with Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.
Tillis, who is retiring at the end of the year, argued his decision to vote for the latest war powers resolution came after the administration again blew past a 60-day deadline to involve Congress.
“We know the resolution’s not gonna pass, but it is important to start saying, ‘We deserve an update. You better start treating — Congress can be an assistance with this war effort, if you inform us,’” Tillis said.
Steve Deace is freaking out about Republicans’ prospects in Iowa this November.
If you aren’t familiar with Deace—and I suspect most of you are not—he is a longtime far-right media personality who hosts “The Steve Deace Show” on Glenn Beck’s BlazeTV. An influential voice in Iowa’s evangelical conservative movement, he holds politics that combine staunch social conservatism and evangelical Christianity with the anti-establishment populism that has defined the MAGA-era right.
In a long post on X on Wednesday, Deace lamented the sorry state of his party in this election cycle.
“Yesterday, Iowa House Republicans were informed by their own pollsters that if you are in a +15 district you’re within the margin for error, if you’re in a +10 district you’re underwater, and that this might end being an even worse midterm environment than 2006,” he wrote.
I couldn’t find a reliable source showing exactly how many state House districts fall within those margins. But Republicans hold a commanding 67 of 100 seats in the chamber, so a political environment in which R+15 districts are within the margin of error would likely put a meaningful chunk of that majority at risk.
And while Deace was specifically talking about state-legislative districts, consider Iowa’s congressional map. Republicans hold all four U.S. House seats, and President Donald Trump’s 2024 margin of victory in three of them was 10 percentage points or less.
“Whatever we’re doing or not doing in Iran/Hormuz has become a 2020 Covid lockdown level of political albatross,” continued Deace. “We are risking what’s left of the Trump presidency on this, because if Democrats take control the legislative branch the Trump domestic agenda we all voted for will largely cease between what a Democrat Congress will do and the courts have already been doing. Not to mention what it will cost individual states like my own, which we have worked so hard to make so red these last 20 years (with Trump’s help).”

In any case, Deace has a solution to their electoral predicament, arguing that Republicans can still win.
“We need the president out on the stump asap,” he wrote, presumably with a straight face. “We need better and way more aggressive messaging. Stop running fake and gay ads about how often so-and-so shows up for votes, and instead mercilessly hammer Democrats on the wickedness they’re voting for. Articulate specifically what the mission/victory is in Iran/Hormuz, because out here in the cheap seats it feels like another Middle East War quagmire regular folks are paying for on both ends all over again.”
Does he really want a senile Trump out on the stump, blabbering about snipers on his arch or the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool or getting his name slapped on the Ford’s Theatre, for Chrissake, because the yawning black hole of his ego can never be filled?
They tried that at their stupid midterm convention, and it failed spectacularly, with the polls cratering afterward.
And what is it about conservatives and thinking the answer is always better “messaging”?
People can’t fill up their tanks. They can’t afford to fill up their grocery carts. Republicans can rant ad infinitum about transgender swimmers, but it won’t change the economic reality facing a vast swath of America.
Latinos voted in distressingly large numbers for Trump in 2024 despite knowing the “wickedness” in his heart because they believed his promises to lower prices. When people can’t afford to feed their families, they’re willing to vote for the devil.
Now right-leaning voters may be confronting their own version of that calculation. However much they may dislike Democrats, however “wicked” they may consider them in normal times, it’s clear that the devil they know is truly a devil, and fuck that guy.
And finally, Deace expects Trump to articulate a theory of victory in Iran? He never articulated one from the beginning.
Ultimately, Deace’s suggestion that Trump spend more time campaigning is a sign that the cult is real. Despite Trump’s approval rating threatening to drop into the 20s (and have in at least one poll), and despite all evidence suggesting that Trump is the biggest reason the GOP is in this predicament, Deace can’t get past his Trump worship. He loves Trump, so he still thinks even higher visibility for the man will save them.
It won’t. But please, by all means, let’s hope Trump is out there on the campaign trail every second of every day from now on through Election Day.

It can be tempting to work from left to right and calculate 7 + 4 = 11, followed by 11 × 0 = 0. But that isn't how the standard order of operations works.
The multiplication must be handled first.
This little puzzle is a good reminder that even very simple equations can cause mistakes when we rush. The phrase “Think fast!” may actually encourage people to answer before carefully looking at the mathematical symbols.
So next time you see an equation like this, take a second and check the operations before giving your answer.

A chunky CHUD busted for allegedly diving into a Manhattan manhole may help solve the mystery behind the invasion of “mole people” spotted emerging from the city’s sewers in recent months.
Kevin Rodriguez, 26, and his fellow Venezuelan citizen Samuel Reveron, 25, were arrested in Queens Thursday after romping in the tunnels underneath a hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stayed for the United Nations General Assembly, cops and sources said.

But the pair weren’t spies or would-be terrorists – they were fishing for discarded or lost treasures in the city’s steamy depths, prosecutors said.

“We go into the sewer and look for valuables that get stuck in the storm drains and sewers, gold, anything of value,” Reveron allegedly told a police officer after his arrest.
The admission appears to confirm a major theory behind what’s motivating a march of mole people who’ve baffled and enthralled New Yorkers.
Just last month, a trio of headlamp-wearing, overalls-clad “Minions” doppelgangers was caught on viral video popping out of a manhole near Penn Station.
Elusive “mole people” have been spotted crawling out of manholes not only near world leader-filled hotels and major transit hubs, but also humble streets in Brooklyn and Queens, since at least late May.

The deeply weird incidents seemed like the sewer-dwelling cannibalistic humanoid monsters from the 1984 cult classic film “C.H.U.D.” coming to life.
But officials said the most likely explanation was significantly less sci-fi horror, but still outlandish wishful thinking.
“We have seen a number of incidents over the past few months of individuals going into the sewer system to look for valuables and other scrap metal after a storm,” the NYPD said in a statement.
The subterranean shenanigans by Reveron, Rodriguez and at least four other still-unidentified sewer muck divers unfolded early Wednesday near East 61st Street and Park Avenue, prosecutors said – just steps from the swanky Loews Regency New York hotel.

Surveillance video showed two separate Toyota Corolla sedans pull up and six shady customers hop out, pry open a sewer cover and hop into the stinky depths beneath the streets, court papers state.
When the trashy troupe emerged, they hopped into the same cars and drove in tandem over the Queensboro Bridge, where license plate readers helped identify the drivers, court documents and sources said.
The hulking Rodriguez was the first suspect identified, leading investigators to body-camera footage from past traffic stops that helped track down Reveron, sources said.
Cops arrested the pair on trespassing and conspiracy charges, leading to their arraignment in Manhattan court Friday.

Both were granted supervised release, with the jumbo-sized sewer spelunker Rodriguez dodging questions from a Post reporter outside the courtroom and onto the street. Reveron illegally entered the US, while Rodriguez is a citizen, sources said.
The pair are part of a larger pattern across the city where spelunkers search for precious metals below ground, a law enforcement source said.
Large groups of men were twice spotted plunging into open manholes in Williamsburg and Gravesend in Brooklyn during the early morning hours May 29.
The back-to-back mole men feature was followed by the bizarre August video showing three sewer sojourners in bib overalls and donning headlamps outside Penn Station, who acrobatically left the depths and disappeared into the night.

Another enigmatic nightcrawler – this time clad in a red and black bandana – pulled a similar stunt in Middle Village, Queens in mid-September.
The dust hadn’t even settled on the Regency hotel misadventure when another filthy threesome of mole people were spotted climbing out of a Bensonhurst sewer early Friday.
The professional urban explorer Steve Duncan, 48, former founder of Undercity and a now-ex-New Yorker, said he never found anything of value during his hundreds of trips into the city’s sewer system.
The city’s extremely efficient sewer system simply leaves no spaces or cracks where potential valuables could get stuck, he said.

“It’s a tidal wave that comes through every time it rains, and so that is enough to sweep silt, small rocks, anything out,” he told The Post on Friday.
Misguided goldbugs and treasure seekers are far more likely to encounter deadly dangers such as low oxygen and “potential explosive atmospheres” because of leaky natural gas lines under the city, Duncan said.
Still, the pipe dream that New York City’s sewers are clogged with treasure inspired underworld explorations long before this year’s moleman extravaganza.

“The reason we went down there is that people lose their gold down there. We got to sell it to make money,” one of them, Willer Green, told cops at the time.
Sources said the gold-seeking CHUD gang with Reveron and Rodriguez could be a larger crew, potentially with connections to a group who entered a subway access gate near the hotel on Monday.
When Reveron was picked up, he was driving without a license and charged separately for that offense, police said. He has an immigration detainer after his arrest.
He has one previous arrest for criminal mischief in Queens, which his attorney Ryan Kennedy said was for car stripping.
A federal law-enforcement source briefed on the matter said that neither suspect appeared to have had malicious intent or posed any threat to the dignitaries staying at the hotel, including Netanyahu.
Reveron’s attorney, Kennedy, didn’t seem surprised by the treasure-hunting accusations.

“He told the police that he was looking for valuables, which seems plausible,” the lawyer said.
New York City’s sewers may not harbor gold, but they do have treasures without a dollar value, Duncan said.
“History is valuable and secret places are valuable,” he said. “It’s not just money value. It’s really cool to be in a city of 10 million people and to have a place that nobody else has been through in years.”
