If you bury a handful of your own toenail clippings around tomato transplants, the most likely thing that will happen after 3 weeks is… almost nothing you can clearly see. The plants will probably be fine, provided the amount is small and the clippings are buried away from the stem. If I wanted to make better use of nail clippings, I would not bury them directly beside a transplant and then wait on results. I’d add them to a hot compost pile instead, where they could mingle with grass clippings, kitchen peelings, dry leaves, and old garden trimmings. In a well-managed pile that heats to 130°F to 150°F and gets turned every 1 to 2 weeks, they’d have a better chance of softening and breaking down over several months.

Give each transplant about 1 gallon of water at planting, then 1 to 1 1/2 gallons two times a week if rainfall is light. Keep water off the leaves when possible to reduce disease pressure.
I also like to side-dress with 1/2 cup of finished compost around each plant about 2 weeks after transplanting, keeping it 3 inches away from the stem. If growth looks pale, a diluted liquid feed can help faster than any slow-to-decompose household scrap. And if your nights dip below 50°F, protecting young tomatoes with covers or milk jugs with the bottoms cut out can matter more than fertilizer ever will.
15. The old-fashioned lesson I took from it
One thing age has taught me is that frugality is a virtue, but not every scrap belongs in every job.
