Over time, the two appeared to form an incredible bond. Photos even showed Marius sitting on Humphrey's back in the water, leading many to believe the massive animal had become completely tame.

But despite years of close contact, Humphrey was still a wild hippopotamus. Hippos are among the most dangerous large mammals in Africa. They are immensely powerful, highly territorial, and can react unpredictably, even toward people they have known for years.

In 2011, the relationship came to a heartbreaking end when Marius Els was found dead near the river on his property. Authorities concluded that Humphrey was responsible for the fatal attack.
