Her mother made sure inaccessible course materials did not stand between her and that goal.
Berru was a visually impaired student at Sakarya University's Faculty of Law in Turkey. For four years, her mother, Havva Kul, accompanied her to university and read legal texts, lecture notes and course materials aloud so Berru could study and prepare for her examinations.
The work remained Berru's.
In 2018, she completed the demanding four-year program and reportedly graduated first in her faculty.
Then came a surprise at the graduation ceremony.
Dean Mahmut Bilen invited Havva onto the stage and presented her with an honorary graduate certificate recognizing the years she had spent helping her daughter access the material. Students and faculty applauded as the mother and daughter received their certificates together.
The certificate was symbolic. Havva did not receive an academic law degree. But the university wanted to acknowledge the quiet work behind Berru's success - thousands of pages read aloud, countless hours of preparation and four years of refusing to let an accessibility barrier end her daughter's education.
Berru's achievement belongs to Berru. Havva's honor recognized the person who made certain she never had to face the obstacles alone.
