Body recovered from Genesee River Gorge near bridge

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — First responders recovered a body from the Genesee River Gorge near the Driving Park Avenue Bridge Friday evening, according to the Rochester Police Department.

Around 2:30 p.m., a member of the U.S. Marshals Task Force spotted what appeared to be a deceased person in the gorge, just south of the bridge.

Rochester police, New York State Police, the Rochester Fire Department and AMR responded to assist with the recovery. The bridge was blocked off as emergency crews worked in the area.

The Rochester Fire Department safely recovered the body from the gorge shortly before 8 p.m., police said.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to identify the person and notify their family.

The body was found in an area where family members and community volunteers had been searching for missing 14-year-old Zane Johnson. Police have not said whether the discovery is connected to Johnson’s disappearance.

Johnson was last seen on camera leaving his home on Conkey Avenue. Earlier Friday, a search party went door to door in the neighborhood looking for information about his whereabouts.

More information is expected once the person has been identified.
