Trump walked onto the field at the World Cup final and 80,000 people booed him so loud the stadium noise jumped from 78 decibels to 84.It happened Sunday at MetLife Stadium, where Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win their second World Cup. Ferran Torres came off the bench and scored the only goal in the 106th minute. It was Spain's night. Their moment.
Trump made it about him.
The crowd had already jeered him earlier, during the national anthems, right after Jennifer Hudson finished singing. When he was shown on the jumbotron, the boos rolled back at him. Then he came out onto the pitch alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino to hand out medals, and the whistles and jeers started again.
He handed Lionel Messi a runners-up medal. He presented the trophy to Spain's captain, Rodri.
And then he wouldn't leave.
As Spain's players gathered to lift the World Cup, Trump planted himself at the edge of the stage and stayed there, positioning himself to be in the photo. Infantino had to jog across the platform to reach him. Trump still didn't move. The Spanish players lifted the trophy anyway, without waiting on him, and eventually he was escorted off so they could celebrate on their own.
He did the EXACT same thing a year ago, at the same stadium, when Chelsea won the Club World Cup. Infantino had to steer him off that stage too.
The security around his visit was so heavy that fans were stuck getting into the stadium before kickoff. Argentina, playing for Messi, managed just 2 shots through extra time, with none on target. Ferran Torres scored the goal that won it.
And Trump, who should be negotiating with Iran right now to end the war, got booed.
