or the Chocolate Cake:
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1¼ cups whole milk
- ½ cup hot brewed coffee
For the Chocolate Buttercream:
- 1½ cups unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
For the Decoration:
- 1 cup chocolate sprinkles
- 12 assorted chocolate truffles
- 8 chocolate wafer pieces
- 6 chocolate pralines
- Chocolate curls or chocolate candies for garnish
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch square cake pans with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes.
4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Stir in the hot coffee until the batter is smooth.
6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 15 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
8. To make the buttercream, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Pour in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt, then beat until light and fluffy.
9. Level the cakes if necessary and spread a generous layer of buttercream between them. Frost the top and sides evenly with the remaining buttercream.
10. Press the chocolate sprinkles gently onto the sides of the cake until completely coated.
11. Pipe decorative swirls of buttercream around the top edge of the cake.
12. Arrange the assorted chocolate truffles, pralines, and chocolate wafer pieces over the top for an elegant bakery-style finish.
13. Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes before slicing to help the decorations set beautifully.
14. Serve at room temperature with coffee, tea, or a glass of cold milk for the ultimate chocolate dessert experience.
