Male nursery web spiders have evolved one of nature’s most fascinating courtship rituals. Before approaching a female, a male often brings a prey item carefully wrapped in silk, known as a nuptial gift.

This silk-wrapped meal serves two purposes. It provides food for the female while also demonstrating that the male is skilled enough to catch valuable prey.

If the female accepts the gift, she usually begins eating it, allowing the male to mate with her. The longer she stays focused on the meal, the longer mating can continue, increasing the male’s chances of successfully fertilizing her eggs.

But not every male plays fair. Some attempt to fool females by wrapping empty insect husks, bits of leaves, or other worthless objects in silk to make them look like real gifts. If the female discovers the deception, she may cut the mating short.

Female nursery web spiders are also known to cannibalize males under certain circumstances, particularly if they are hungry or the male approaches without caution. However, males are not typically attacked simply because their gift is small or rejected. The primary purpose of the silk-wrapped prey is to distract the female, reducing the risk of attack and giving the male a better chance to reproduce
