Melania Trump seems to have taken a step back from the public eye, with one PR expert suggesting it's all part of a plan.
The first lady, 56, has been seen in public just 14 to 16 times this year, according to journalist Joanna Coles, who suggested Melania has done a "vanishing act." While Melania was at the 2026 World Cup final and at celebrations for the Fourth of July, she was noticeably absent when her husband Donald Trump traveled to China, and she also skipped Donald Trump Jr's wedding.
Joanna admitted she finds it "very odd that she's missing," but publicist Dylan Thomas Cotter suggested she could be trying to "distance herself" from her husband.
It comes after Trump's assistant was told to 'change his diaper' in an awkward moment caught on camera.
Dylan told The Irish Star, "The public, in a first for the United States, is witnessing a First Lady who is strategically positioning and publicizing herself while also distancing herself from the very man tasked with governing this country.
"That’s an interesting divergence from the historically dated patriarchal PR pattern of 'stand by your man' that was followed by many a First Lady throughout the course of this nation’s history."
The publicist continued, "All that said, there’s quite a bit of power at play within any political administration, and in particular for this administration, the focus does appear outwardly to be more on personal PR and personal business ventures and enrichment than on the dedication to and efficacy of providing consistent high-level public service."
He concluded, "The First Lady may or may not be forced to take a step back by her partner; however, if she does, it’ll only reinforce the potential of public perception that her partner, who holds one of the most powerful offices in the world, may very well be intimidated by the potential of AFAB people outshining him as we've also seen reflected by the many female journalists who've rightfully questioned the President upon both his Presidential, business and personal dealings."
Dylan's comments come after journalist Joanna Coles and author Michael Wolff discussed Melania's marriage. Speaking on The Daily Beast's Inside Trump's Head podcast, Joanna pointed out, "We really have seen almost nothing of the first lady this year, which is why it was a surprise to see her.
"We've seen her, I think, three times this month at UFC at the fireworks. And she was there with Barron at the World Cup final on Sunday. And actually, I looked it up. She's done approximately 14 to 16 public appearances this year."
In comparison, Joanna said Michelle Obama made between 100 to 150 public appearances a year, Laura Bush about 120, and Jill Biden more than 100 trips alongside her husband, Joe Biden.
Michael also pointed to Melania's relatively few appearances on the 2024 presidential campaign trail. Joanna went on to ask, "What is she doing the rest of the time? I do have questions about her because it's very odd that she's missing, and she is particularly elegant.
"So I always like to know what she's wearing when she shows up. What is she doing? What she do with all her time?" In response, Michael called the Trump marriage the "strangest marriage in the history of all presidential marriages." Meanwhile, Melania and Donald's unusual sleeping arrangements were exposed.
