Nearly 9.5 million Americans are now in default on their federal student loans.

That’s roughly one in five federal student loan borrowers.

Together, they owe more than $230 billion.

For years, pandemic-era payment pauses gave millions of borrowers temporary relief.

But when repayments resumed, many were met with the same loan balances—while facing higher rents, rising grocery prices, and increased everyday living costs.

For millions, keeping up with monthly payments became increasingly difficult.

Defaulting on a federal student loan can have serious consequences, including damaged credit, seized tax refunds, withheld federal benefits, and even wage garnishment.

These numbers highlight a challenge that extends far beyond individual circumstances.

They reflect the financial pressures many borrowers face as they try to balance the cost of higher education with today’s economic realities.

For countless people, earning a degree was meant to create more opportunities.

Instead, many continue to struggle under the weight of debt years after leaving the classroom.
