New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani was offered an 18% pay raise.

 

He turned it down.

The increase would have raised his annual salary from $258,750 to $305,800.

An extra $47,050 every year.

But Mamdani said accepting it would send the wrong message while millions of New Yorkers struggle with rent, food and everyday costs.

He told reporters:

“I haven’t knocked on anyone’s door in New York City and had them tell me their concern is that the mayor makes too little.”

The wider bill still passed and raised salaries for other city officials.

But Mamdani said he would continue taking his existing salary.

Supporters praised the decision as proof that he is serious about affordability.

Critics argued that refusing the money was symbolic and would not lower anyone else’s bills.

But politics is built on symbols.

And in a city where so many people feel squeezed, rejecting a $47,000 raise sends a very clear one.

The mayor was offered more.
