Three years later, she has completed a journey through every branch of the country’s Armed Forces. ![]()
The future queen began at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza, where she trained alongside other Army cadets.
She learned discipline, navigation, weapons handling, survival skills and how to lead under pressure.
But that was only the beginning.
During her second year, Leonor joined the Spanish Navy and spent months aboard the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano. She crossed the Atlantic, worked with the crew and experienced the demanding daily routine of life at sea. ![]()
Her final year took her to the General Air and Space Academy.
There, she trained as a military pilot, completed a solo flight and faced one of the most demanding challenges of her entire preparation.

Leonor completed several jumps, including one at night, before receiving her official paratrooper badge.
In doing so, she became the first member of the Spanish Royal Family to qualify as a paratrooper. ![]()
Her training officially ended in July 2026, when King Felipe VI presented his daughter with her new military rank and the Grand Cross of Aeronautical Merit.
It was more than a graduation ceremony.
It marked the completion of a carefully planned three-year journey designed to prepare Leonor for the responsibilities she may one day carry as queen and supreme commander of Spain’s Armed Forces. ![]()
She will now begin studying Political Science while continuing her royal duties.
Leonor is expected to become Spain’s first reigning queen since Isabella II, whose reign ended more than 150 years ago.
She was born into a future already chosen for her.
But instead of preparing only inside palaces and ceremonial halls, she trained in the mud, lived aboard a naval ship, flew military aircraft and jumped from a plane into the darkness.
The crown may one day be placed on her head...
But first, she proved that she was willing to carry the weight that comes with it. ![]()
Do you think every future monarch should complete the same demanding training as the people they may one day command?
