FAQs & Tips

What is corned beef hash?

Corned beef hash is a classic American comfort dish made from corned beef, diced potatoes, and onions. While it is usually cooked until tender & crispy in a skillet, this is a crockpot version. Corned beef hash became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time, inexpensive

canned corned beef was widely available, and cooks began pairing it with potatoes to create a filling and economical meal. This has is a classic comfort food often served for breakfast or brunch but it’s hearty enough to enjoy any time of day.

What type of corned beef should you use?

I like to use leftover corned beef that’s either diced or shredded. You can also use canned corned beef in place of leftover corned beef. Just be sure to break it into chunks before adding it to the slow cooker.

Can you double this recipe?

Yes! I made a small batch but you can easily double the recipe and use a larger slow cooker.

Can you add other vegetables to this?

Absolutely. I only added onion. Feel free to add in other veggies like bell peppers or carrots.

How do you serve this?

I eat this as-is. Other common ways include:

  • With eggs on top – Fried or poached eggs are the classic pairing. The runny yolk adds richness to the dish.

  • With toast or biscuits – Perfect for soaking up the savory flavors.

  • As a diner-style breakfast plate – Served alongside eggs, toast, and sometimes fresh fruit.

  • With leftover vegetables – Some versions include cabbage, peppers, or carrots mixed into the hash.

How do you store leftovers?

Store leftover crockpot corned beef hash in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Can you freeze this?

Yes! Freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in a skillet for the best texture.

What size slow cooker did you use?

I use small 3.5-quart slow cooker. Feeding a larger crowd? Double the recipe and use a larger 6-quart slow cooker!
