The great tit, a colorful songbird found across Europe and Asia, could face serious population declines in the future due to the effects of climate change, according to researchers. Scientists warn that rising temperatures are disrupting the natural timing between birds and their food sources, creating challenges that could threaten their survival.
A study published in the journal Ecology Letters, led by Emily Simmonds from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, examined how climate change affects the relationship between great tits and the insects they depend on for feeding their young.
As global temperatures rise, winters are becoming warmer and springs are arriving earlier. This causes plants and trees to grow leaves sooner, which leads to insect larvae, such as caterpillars, hatching earlier than usual. These insects are an important food source for young great tits during the breeding season.
The problem is that the timing of these natural events is becoming mismatched. While some great tit populations have adapted by laying eggs earlier to match the earlier availability of insects, researchers believe this adaptation may not continue forever. The insects could continue changing their life cycles faster than the birds can adjust.
Scientists describe this situation as a growing gap between predators and their food sources. If the difference becomes too large, young birds may not find enough food to survive, leading to population declines.
Using statistical models and different climate scenarios, researchers suggested that under extreme warming conditions, if insect larvae begin appearing around 24 days earlier than current patterns, great tit populations could potentially disappear by the year 2100 in some areas.
However, the study also found that populations may survive if global warming is limited to lower or moderate levels. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing climate change could help protect these birds and many other species that depend on stable seasonal patterns.
The great tit is not the only bird affected by climate change. Conservation groups have warned that many bird species worldwide are facing growing risks as temperatures increase and habitats change. Research suggests that rising global temperatures could threaten a significant portion of animal and plant species over the coming decades.
Scientists emphasize that climate change does not only affect individual species directly through temperature changes but also disrupts the complex connections between plants, insects, birds, and entire ecosystems.
