YOUR YARD IS FEEDING... OR STARVING WILDLIFE 🐦🦋

Most of us choose plants because they're beautiful. 🌸 But to birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects, beauty isn't enough.

A yard filled with non-native ornamental plants may look perfect to us—but it can be surprisingly empty for wildlife. Many imported landscape plants produce very little food for native caterpillars, bees, and birds. Since over 95% of North American backyard birds feed insects (especially caterpillars) to their chicks, the plants you choose directly affect how much life your garden supports.

The good news? You don't have to turn your yard into a wild jungle. Simply replacing a few high-maintenance ornamental plants with native trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses can dramatically increase biodiversity. Native oaks, serviceberries, asters, goldenrods, milkweed, coneflowers, and other regional natives provide nectar, pollen, berries, seeds, and host plants that local wildlife evolved to use.

🌱 A Simple Comparison

❌ Traditional Landscape Yard

Mostly decorative plants
Few caterpillars
Limited bird food
Lower pollinator diversity
Beautiful—but biologically quiet

✅ Wildlife-Friendly Native Yard

Native trees and shrubs
Host plants for butterflies
Flowers for bees all season
Seeds and berries for birds
Healthy soil full of beneficial insects
Beautiful and alive with nature
🦋 Easy Upgrades Anyone Can Make

🌳 Plant one native tree.
🌼 Replace one flower bed with native perennials.
🐝 Leave some stems standing through winter.
🍂 Keep a small leaf pile for overwintering insects.
💧 Add a shallow bird bath.
🚫 Reduce pesticide use whenever possible.

❌ Common Mistakes

❌ Choosing plants only because they bloom.
❌ Removing every fallen leaf each autumn.
❌ Spraying insects before identifying them.
❌ Growing only sterile ornamental varieties.
❌ Expecting wildlife without providing food.

Every native plant is part of a food web. One small change in your garden can feed hundreds—even thousands—of living creatures over its lifetime.
