Barack Obama just paid tribute to Dolly Parton with a touching message celebrating everything from her music to her literacy work and even her role in helping accelerate COVID vaccine research.
“It’s hard to imagine many people having a bigger impact than Dolly Parton,” Obama wrote.
He reflected on just how extraordinary her life was.
Born in a one-room cabin, Dolly went on to win 11 Grammys and an Emmy, build a business empire, and become one of the most beloved entertainers in American history.
But Obama made clear that her legacy went far beyond music.
He highlighted the millions of children she helped learn to read through her literacy work and pointed to her support for research that contributed to the development of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
“What a life,” Obama wrote.
It is hard to think of a more fitting summary.
Dolly Parton spent decades entertaining the world, but she also spent that time giving back in ways that changed lives.
Books for children.
Support for medical research.
Help for communities in need.
And a body of music that became part of American culture itself.
Obama closed by saying that he and Michelle were thinking of Dolly’s family and her “many, many fans.”
It was a simple tribute, but an incredibly fitting one.
Dolly Parton lived an enormous life.
And Barack Obama just made sure Americans remember how much of it was spent helping other people.
We need more of this in America
