The reported exchange between Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is turning heads for all the obvious reasons.
Netanyahu is quoted as saying that Israel could strike Turkish forces without triggering NATO’s Article 5, a statement that immediately raises the stakes between two already tense regional powers.
Erdoğan’s response, as quoted, was anything but subtle:
“This isn’t Gaza. Touch our sovereignty and it will be your worst nightmare. Even Trump won’t save you. Stay in your limits.”
That is about as direct as diplomatic warnings get.
The bigger irony, according to critics, is that Netanyahu is now talking tough about Turkey after already facing major pressure and confrontation with Iran.
And Turkey is not exactly a small player that can be brushed aside.
The message from Ankara, at least in this exchange, is clear: do not mistake Turkish territory or forces for an easy target.
Netanyahu may be trying to project strength, but threatening another major regional power while tensions are already running high could open a completely different level of confrontation.
