Rep. Ralph Norman criticized the Senate after a bill to restrict stock trading by members of Congress failed to advance, telling Newsmax on Thursday that senators have continued to fail to act on legislation passed by the House.
"The Senate hasn't done anything all year long other than go on vacation," the South Carolina Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America Early," adding that he was not surprised by the chamber's failure to pass the Stop Insider Trading Act, which would have barred members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from buying new stocks.
The legislation received 53 votes, short of the 60 needed to advance.
Norman said the House had passed more than 670 bills, including the SAVE America Act twice, and accused the Senate of failing to act on those measures.
"It's time for reawakening, literally and figuratively, in the Senate, because it's where good bills go to die," he said. "America deserves better than this, and they're not getting it."
Asked whether opposition to voter ID provisions had made it harder to build support for the stock trading ban, Norman said the issues were "lumped together."
He called both measures common-sense proposals and said members of Congress should not be able to profit from information about where federal money is going.
"Members of Congress get information on where federal dollars are going, which company is getting them, and then to be able to profit from that, which your ordinary taxpayer could not do," Norman said.
Norman also criticized the Senate's failure to advance a separate measure on data center power costs. The measure received 57 votes, also short of the 60 needed.
"It doesn't go far enough. I guess their answer is do nothing. How far does that go?" Norman said, adding that the measure did not protect people paying electricity bills.
"It's time to take the credit card and the checking account away from politicians in the Senate," he said.
