Trump Says He Regrets Nominating Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett

President Donald Trump said in a new interview that he regrets nominating Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, faulting them for ruling against his policies.

"Yeah. Yeah. What can I do? I put them in," Trump told Time magazine in an interview published Thursday.

"They voted against me too often," he added. "I gave them the position of a lifetime, and they vote against me often. They vote for me too."

Trump compared the justices with others in the high court who were nominated by Democrats, who he said "stick like glue" when they vote.

He said he admired their loyalty to former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but noted that his own appointees had not shown him the same allegiance.

"They have loyalty to Biden, even though Biden doesn't even know who the hell they are," Trump said. "He wouldn't know. He doesn't even know what the Supreme Court is."

But he added about his picks: "I gave them the chance of a lifetime, and it's unfortunate what they did."

Asked whether he wanted loyalty from his Supreme Court nominees, Trump first said, "I do like loyalty, yeah."

He then clarified: "No, I don't want loyalty. I want good decisions. The tariff decision was disastrous for the country. I want good decisions for the country."

For example, he said the court's ruling on birthright citizenship has created a "major industry."

In June, the court rejected Trump's effort to end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily. Barrett joined the majority.

Kavanaugh agreed that Trump's order was unlawful under federal law, though he did not join the majority's constitutional reasoning, and Gorsuch dissented.

"People are making millions and millions of dollars, and we're losing trillions of dollars," said Trump. "And it's become a corrupt business, all because of the Supreme Court decision. That decision was for the babies of slaves."

He also criticized the court's ruling that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize him to impose tariffs.

Gorsuch and Barrett joined the majority, while Kavanaugh dissented.

"This tariff decision again, all they had to do was a little clause saying any money paid does not have to be paid back," said Trump. "It would have saved $400 billion. They chose not to save that."
