Before the White House: The Chance Photo Shoot That Launched Melania Trump's Modeling Career

 

 In 1992, Slovenian photographer Stane Jerko first spotted eighteen-year-old Melania Knavs and invited her to a photo session only a few weeks after meeting her. During that early shoot, he helped teach her how to pose in front of the camera, unknowingly setting in motion a modeling journey that would eventually lead all the way to the White House. Jerko later shared that one unexpected challenge was finding shoes that fit because Melania's feet were larger than those of most models he had photographed. Rather than seeing it as a drawback, he viewed it as just another unique feature that made her stand out.

That same year, Melania competed in Jana Magazine's "Look of the Year" contest and earned second place. The achievement came with a professional modeling contract and opened the door to opportunities across Europe. It also led to a life-changing decision, as she chose to leave her architecture studies at the University of Ljubljana after just one year to pursue modeling as a full-time career.

She later signed with the Milan-based agency RVR Reclame and adopted the more internationally familiar name "Melania Knauss," replacing the Slovenian spelling Melanija Knavs as she prepared to work throughout Italy and France. Over the following years, she traveled extensively for fashion assignments before eventually settling in Paris at around twenty-three years old. There, she shared an apartment with fellow model Victoria Silvstedt, the Swedish beauty queen who had recently been crowned Miss World Sweden.

Their shared living arrangement reflected the reality of the European fashion industry, where young models often lived together, shared expenses, and traveled from country to country in search of new opportunities. What started as a chance meeting with a local Slovenian photographer—who simply needed to find a pair of shoes that fit his new model—ultimately became the beginning of the remarkable journey of a woman who would one day become one of the most recognizable First Ladies in American history.
