U.S. health officials have issued an important public health advisory after a Cyclospora outbreak was linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at select Taco Bell restaurants. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the outbreak has resulted in 1,644 laboratory-confirmed cases and 94 hospitalizations. No fatalities have been reported.

The advisory applies to Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, with Michigan reporting the highest number of cases. Investigators traced the affected shredded iceberg lettuce to Taylor Farms, which sourced the lettuce from operations in Mexico. As a precaution, Taco Bell removed the potentially affected lettuce from its supply chain. Some restaurants also temporarily removed other fresh ingredients while replacing their lettuce supply.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can infect the digestive system. People affected may experience watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, tiredness, and weight loss. Symptoms can continue for several days or even longer if not treated.

Health officials advise anyone who recently ate shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell in the affected states to watch for these symptoms. If they become unwell, they should contact a healthcare provider. The advisory is part of ongoing efforts to protect public health while authorities continue monitoring the situation and ensuring food safety.
