During the devastating flash floods that struck Texas in July 2025, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskan demonstrated extraordinary courage while serving as a rescue swimmer.  As floodwaters rapidly overwhelmed communities, Ruskan took part in dangerous rescue missions around Camp Mystic and nearby areas, where families and children were trapped by the rising water. Working in swift, hazardous conditions, he repeatedly entered the floodwaters to bring stranded people to safety. His efforts helped save an incredible **165 lives**, making him one of the standout heroes of the disaster.

In recognition of his exceptional bravery and selfless service, President Donald Trump awarded Ruskan the **Legion of Merit** during the 2026 State of the Union address.  The prestigious honor celebrated his unwavering commitment to protecting others, even at great personal risk.

One of the most touching moments came when Ruskan reunited with Milly Cate McClymond, one of the young campers he had rescued during the floods.  Their emotional meeting served as a powerful reminder of the lives forever changed by his actions.

Scott Ruskan's courage, dedication, and willingness to risk everything for strangers have inspired people across the nation, proving that true heroes are defined not by recognition, but by the lives they save.
