ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Former Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering issued a public apology Friday after he was arrested during a Rochester police prostitution detail.
Pickering, 68, of Victor, was one of six people charged Thursday with third-degree patronizing a person for prostitution, a misdemeanor. Rochester police said the detail was conducted in the Lyell Avenue corridor.
In a statement addressed to the Rochester and Monroe County community, Pickering acknowledged the arrest and apologized to his family, friends and the community.
“As a retired law enforcement officer, I certainly am aware of the law as well the negative impacts of this incident,” Pickering said. “I will handle this matter earnestly and honestly.”
Pickering said he hopes to regain the community’s trust and expressed respect for the Rochester police officers involved in the detail.
“I am incredibly sorry for the pain, embarrassment, and shame this arrest has caused my family, friends and the community at large,” he said.
Pickering served with the Webster Police Department for 30 years, including as police chief from 2001 until his retirement in 2015.
He said he would have no additional conversations about the case outside of those with his family and faith.
The other five people charged were identified as Stephen Aldrich, 56, of Port Byron; Michael Winston, 62, of Rochester; Ty’Mir Puryear, 25, of Rochester; Alexander Fico, 40, of Irondequoit; and Omid Daryoush, 23, of Rochester.
