ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Fire Department will honor the life and service of Lt. John “JJ” Joseph with a full line-of-duty death funeral service next week at Blue Cross Arena.
The service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Blue Cross Arena, located at One War Memorial Square.
Joseph died following a battle with cancer, according to the Rochester Fire Department. He was surrounded by family and loved ones.
The department said Joseph dedicated his career to serving the City of Rochester and its residents with honor, courage and compassion. Fire service members from across the region are expected to join the Rochester Fire Department in paying tribute to his life and service.
“The bond shared by firefighters extends far beyond the walls of the firehouse,” the department said in a statement. “In moments like these, we are reminded that we are a family, united by service, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to one another.”
The funeral service will include traditional line-of-duty death honors, including a Fire Department Color Guard, a full fire apparatus funeral procession, a Last Alarm Ceremony, the presentation of the American flag to Joseph’s family and the presentation of his fire helmet to his family.
The department also said additional ceremonial honors will recognize Joseph’s years of dedicated service.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, loved ones, and every member of the Rochester Fire Department as we grieve the loss of our beloved brother,” the department said.
Officials said Joseph’s memory will continue to serve as a source of strength for those who knew him and an example for those who follow in his footsteps.
