New York Subway Attack Leaves Man Seriously Injured After Being Pushed Onto Tracks

A shocking New York City subway attack on New Year’s Eve left a 45-year-old man seriously injured after prosecutors say he was pushed onto the tracks as an approaching train entered the station.

The incident happened on December 31, 2024, at the 18th Street station in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, 23-year-old Kamel Hawkins approached the victim as he waited for a downtown No. 1 train and allegedly shoved him onto the tracks.

Victim Survived the Train

The victim, identified as Joseph Lynskey, suffered multiple serious injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured skull and a ruptured spleen. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital following the incident.

According to prosecutors, the train passed over Lynskey while he was on the tracks. He survived the attack and later spoke publicly about his experience, expressing gratitude to the emergency responders and medical teams who helped save his life.

Suspect Arrested Later That Day

Police arrested Hawkins later on December 31 at the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station. Prosecutors said he was allegedly wearing clothing consistent with what he had been wearing during the subway incident.

In January 2025, a Manhattan grand jury indicted Hawkins on charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault and second-degree assault. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office emphasized that the charges are allegations and that Hawkins is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Hawkins pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A Case That Raised Subway Safety Concerns

The incident renewed concerns about the safety of passengers standing near subway platforms, particularly the risk of passengers being pushed onto tracks.

Lynskey later said that New Yorkers should not have to fear standing on a subway platform while waiting for a train. His experience also became part of a broader discussion about whether additional safety measures are needed throughout the city's subway system.

In 2026, Lynskey also filed a civil lawsuit involving the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the city, alleging that additional platform safety measures could have reduced the danger.
