A provocative question circulating online is asking Americans to imagine an alternate political reality: If Kamala Harris had defeated Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, would the United States be in a better place today?

It is a question that invites strong opinions—but it is also a hypothetical that cannot be answered with certainty.

The official 2024 Electoral College results show that Donald Trump won the presidency with 312 electoral votes to Harris’s 226. Trump also received about 77.3 million popular votes, compared with roughly 75 million for Harris.

An Alternate Presidency

Had Harris won, the political landscape in Washington would look fundamentally different.

As the Democratic nominee in 2024, Harris campaigned on a platform that emphasized lowering living costs, expanding economic opportunity, protecting reproductive rights, strengthening border security while pursuing immigration reform, and continuing investments in infrastructure, climate and clean energy.

Her campaign also proposed policies intended to support small businesses, including a goal of 25 million new business applications and an expansion of the tax deduction for startup expenses.

Whether those proposals would have produced better economic or social outcomes is impossible to establish because they were never implemented under a Harris presidency.

The Economy Would Have Taken a Different Path

Economic policy would likely have been one of the clearest areas of difference.

Harris's 2024 economic agenda included proposals aimed at lowering costs for households, increasing housing affordability and supporting small businesses. Her campaign also presented a plan for expanding access to capital and encouraging entrepreneurship.

But the actual effects of those policies would have depended on Congress, economic conditions, Federal Reserve decisions, global markets and many other factors.

That makes claims that America definitely would be richer—or poorer—under Harris speculative rather than established fact.

The 2024 Democratic platform called for stronger border security alongside expanded legal immigration and changes to the asylum system.

A Harris administration would therefore have entered office with a stated goal of combining enforcement with broader immigration reforms.
